A trip to the Elcho Ice Cream Shoppe

So, I've survived my second day here in the Northwoods, but not without interesting observations. One of those observations is ongoing in fact.

As I'm typing, I am being treated to the soothing sound of bugs dying via an industrial size bug zapper. Some of the bugs that die take more than 10 seconds, creating a long, beautiful buzzing sound.

But, the most exciting events occurred earlier in the evening.

After dinner and some staff meetings, we took a trip into town to the Elcho Ice Cream Shoppe, as pictured above. It was — to say the least — a quaint little place.

My favorite part was the fact they advertised their homemade cones, while serving Chocolate Shoppe ice cream. What kind of ice cream place makes their own cones and not their own ice cream?

Oh, and on the way there, our program director apparently almost hit a bear cub. Just kidding, it was a real bear cub. It came out of the woods and crossed paths with the car they were driving.

I just hope at some point this summer I get to experience the excitement of crossing paths with a bear.
